Flag Day 2014

Today is Flag Day, the day that honors our nation’s flag.

What a symbol of freedom it is. Bold colors of Red, somber Blue & White purity. It shares and expresses our freedoms in ways unimaginable anywhere else in the world. It can be burned as a symbol of protest reflecting our Right to Free Speech. It is also burned as a matter of final respect to a flag that has honorable served its time. For us, that’s not even a paradox.

Stirring iconic flag images rouse the spirit of patriotism.  These come immediately to the mind’s internal & eternal eye:  Marines raising the flag over Mt Suribachi, Iwo Jima.  Ground Zero in New York.  Both flags were beacons of hope during times of seemingly relentless despair.

Flags have become ubiquitous while always reminding us to look up. Look up to our freedoms, rights & responsibilities. Honor those who are serving for our collective higher good.

Remembering those who remind us.

You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
