Dot & Cross

What keeps you up at night?

Sometimes, it could be the lack of documentation. That one off situation from several weeks ago, last month or even last year has festered and re-emerged like zombies from the living dead. The corollary may be an unknown situation that if known at the time, could have been then. This leads to the reality of ‘see me three weeks ago’.

Documentation is critical to supporting the fact finding mission of who did what, when & why. Toss in where and how will get you to the 5 Ws + 1H. Even if it what seems innocuous  at the moment, could later become insidious.

Good documentation protects both the company & the employee while preserving the truth.

There are several decent methods that are easily completed.

One way is the electronic memo or email to file. Who did what, when, where, why & how. These electronic emails & files are extension of the employee’s file. As such, their presence & content need to be known to the employee v some secret stash from which the employee is ambushed from.

An even more transparent method is the  3E Progressive  Discipline  (3EPD) process.  Education as to expectations. Encouragement when expectations are met with reminder coaching when they are not. Repetitive render  coaching leads to enforcement. Start wth the Written Record of Verbal Warning.

If, then & when may come next. Or Not. You will be a hero when you have documentation. The lack of documentation makes you a zero, reliant only upon hopeful recollection.

Documentation is like sex: when it is good, it is very, very good: and when it is bad, it is better than nothing.
