“I’m always trying new things and changing how I work. As we’ve grown from a team of four to a team of 28, my job has changed pretty significantly, and by experimenting with new habits and processes regularly, I am always discovering better ways to run my team that make sense as we grow.”
–Zach Supalla, co-founder and CEO of Particle, an “Internet of Things” startup that raised more than $1.1 million on Kickstarter and $4.9 million in series A funding.
OED on Experiment : A scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact: a course of action tentatively adopted without being sure of the eventual outcome.
The first thought that comes to mind is the story of Thomas Edison & inventing the lightbulb. Along the way to success, he found/learned 99 ways that did not work.
The Internet of Things represents the modern continuation of Edison’s invented/entrepreneurial spirit. Everything & everyone gets connected. Smart this, that, anything & everything. We exist in an invisible cloud of constantly streaming data. Ideas are created by touch, then transported globally. Each idea is a thought experiment that starts with an “I wonder ….” moment.
This fifth habit is essential to growth. Growth is the antidote to stagnation. Experiment by doing something different today. At the very least, you will learn what doesn’t work. Or be pleasantly surprised.
